Goal(s)
The objective of this course is to illustrate the basics of modelling the mechanical behaviour of soils (dilatance, friction, dependence of behaviour on average normal stress) within the framework of elastic-plasticity theory (perfect plasticity and with cold work). At the end of the course, students should be able to understand the mathematical structure of the laws of behaviour most commonly used in finite element software for geotechnical applications, and how to determine their parameters from laboratory tests.
Content(s)
1. Introduction
2. Strain, stress, stress paths
3. Testing apparatus: conventional and non conventional systems, possibilities and limitations
