Goal(s)

Acquire the hydraulic concepts encountered in geotechnical engineering:

  • calculate the forces applied by water on a structure;
  • design hydraulic pipes;
  • understand and quantify flows in soils.

Content(s)

I. Hydrostatics
1. Pressure, head
2. Water / structure interaction

II. Flow in pipes
1. Ideal fluid : Bernouilli law, energy
2. Real fluid : Viscosity, Reynolds number, flow regime
3. Head loss in pipe
4. Pumps and turbines

III. Underground flows
1. Hydraulic properties of soils (porous media, caracteristic properties)
2. Saturated flow / Darcy law (experiment and theory)
3. Underground flows (pumping, draining, consolidation,...)
