Goal(s)
Know the main retaining wall families
understand the behaviour of the retaining structures (passive and active earth pressure, mode of failure)
Design the gravity walls and the embedded walls (in the frame of the French application of Eurocode 7 standard)
Using aa design software implementing the elasto-plastic method (and mastering the principle of calculation)

1. Main families of retaining walls. Definition and terminology
2. Active and passive earth pressures on retaining walls. Calculation using several methods
3. Limit states and design of gravity walls (project based learning)
4. Limit states and design of embedded walls
5. Construction site visit
- Soil mechanics (stress state in soils, deformations, soil bahaviour, shear resistance, failure)
- Shallow and deep foundations
- Eurocodes
