Goal(s)

Working efficiently with a spreadsheet
Use cell references and formulas correctly
Run simulations (change data to automatically recalculate results)
Use a graph to make estimates (regression curve),
Automate certain tedious and repetitive tasks using Visual Basic programming
Store and manage data efficiently in a database
Understand how relational databases are structured and their vocabulary (fields, records, tables, relationships, keys)
Model a concrete problem in the form of a database
Manage data effectively:

  • extract information using forms with filters and queries (with parameters)
  • define calculations on data
  • define automatic actions on data (fill in, delete or modify data)

Content(s)

Spreadsheets - Excel
Review of formulas, cells, functions, the concept of simulation, graphs, etc.
Case study of a workbook requiring tedious and repetitive modifications.
Description of the Visual Basic language (its syntax and access to workbook cells)
Programming exercises
Databases - Access
Principles and definitions of a database
Exercise in designing the structure of a database
Using an existing Access database (observing its structure, querying the data)
Using queries and forms
Creating a small Access database
More advanced functions

  • Performing calculations on stored data
  • on columns (calculated fields),
  • on rows (operation queries)
  • Use action queries to define automatic data modifications
