Goal(s)

The goal is to introduce the basic notions of seismology. What is the origin of earthquakes? How do seismic wave propagate in the earth crust and in the shallow geological structures? This class introduce in particular the notions of seismic rupture, elastic wave propagation, and site effects (reponse of the shallow geological structures).

Content(s)

  • Introduction to seismology
  • Seismic source (notions of magnitude, focal mechanism, scaling laws, rupture kinematics)
  • Wave propagation (elastodynamics, physics of site effects)
  • Methods for ground motion estimation

Prerequisites

Basics in geophysics, mechanics, signal processing, geology and statistics
